Where should I stay in Vilnius?

First-time visitors should stay in or just outside the Old Town — the easiest base for walking to everything. Užupis suits creative travellers who want a cooler, quieter neighbourhood at slightly lower prices. Naujamiestis works well for budget travellers with its mid-range hotels and good transport links.

Vilnius is a compact city. Unlike Rome or Paris, you will not suffer badly from a poor location choice — a 20-minute walk or a single bus ride connects almost any central neighbourhood with the Old Town. But the character of each area differs, and that matters for how your visit feels.

The Old Town (Senamiestis)

Best for: first visits, couples, anyone who wants to walk out of their hotel and immediately be in historic Vilnius.

The Vilnius Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is the obvious choice and the correct one for most visitors. Cathedral Square, the Gate of Dawn, Pilies Street, Gediminas Tower and virtually every major sight is here. Staying inside the Old Town means no transit time — you wake up in it.

The Old Town is also where most of the city’s best hotels sit, which drives prices up. Expect to pay €90-180 for a decent double in high season.

Specific options:

  • Hotel Artagonist (Labdarių g. 3) — design hotel in a beautifully renovated baroque building, doubles from ~€130 in high season. Genuinely stylish without being pretentious.
  • Hotel Stikliai (Gaono g. 7) — the most famous Old Town hotel, solidly 5-star, doubles from €200+. Excellent if budget is not a primary concern.
  • Mabre Residence Hotel (Maironio g. 13) — mid-range, good value for the location, doubles from €70-100.
  • Cathedral Square Hotel (Šventaragio g. 7) — decent 3-star, unbeatable location, doubles from €65.

The main downside: weekend nights in the centre can be noisy until 2am (bar traffic on Vokiečių Street and Šv. Ignoto area). Ask for a rear-facing room if light sleep is important.

Užupis

Best for: creative travellers, couples who want a village-within-a-city feel, second-time visitors.

Užupis (pronounced “oo-zhoo-pis”) is the bohemian self-declared “republic” across the Vilnelė river from the Old Town — a 10-minute walk from Cathedral Square. It has galleries, small studios, murals and independent cafes. The accommodation here is mostly apartments and small guesthouses rather than hotels. Prices run 20-30% below the Old Town for equivalent quality.

Options:

  • Several highly-rated Booking.com and Airbnb apartments in the streets around Užupio g. and Malūnų g.
  • Small guesthouses like Uzupis Hostel (budget, dorms from €13) or Boutique Hotel 167 (boutique, from €85).

The main downside: slightly uneven cobblestones and narrow streets — not ideal if you have heavy luggage. The bridge to the Old Town is a short but constant walk.

Naujamiestis (New Town)

Best for: budget travellers, longer stays, digital nomads.

Naujamiestis is the area south of the river from the Old Town — roughly from the train station (Geležinkelio stotis) north to Lukiškių Square. It is where Vilnius’s independent coffee scene is concentrated (Brew Collective, Crooked Nose & Coffee Stories) and where more of the city’s actual residents eat and drink daily.

Walk to the Old Town: 20-25 minutes on foot (pleasant route via the river). By bus: 1 stop, €1.

Hotels here run €45-90 for a decent double, with more apartment-style accommodation available.

Options:

  • Hotel Novotel Vilnius Centre (Gedimino pr. 16, edge of Naujamiestis/Old Town) — consistent 4-star, doubles from €90-120.
  • Comfort Hotel LT (Šeimyniškių g. 1) — reliable budget/mid-range, doubles from €55-75.
  • Various Airbnb apartments in the streets around Pylimo, Savanoriu and Gedimino pr.

Žvėrynas

Best for: families, longer stays, travellers who like a quiet residential base.

Žvėrynas is west of the Old Town, across the Neris river — a leafy, quiet residential neighbourhood with wooden architecture and good parks. Walk to the Old Town: 20-25 minutes. By trolleybus: 10 minutes.

No major hotels, but self-catering apartments work very well here (€50-90/night). It is genuinely off the tourist circuit and gives a more authentic picture of how Vilniečiai (Vilnius residents) live.

Near the train and bus station

Best for: transit-focused trips, early arrivals/late departures.

The area around the Vilnius intercity bus station (Autobusų stotis) and train station (Geležinkelio stotis) on Geležinkelio g. has a cluster of budget hotels and hostels. It is functional but not atmospheric — a place to sleep, not a neighbourhood.

Walk to the Old Town: 25-30 minutes, or 1-2 bus stops.

Options:

  • Hostelgate Vilnius — well-rated hostel, dorms €14-20, near the station.
  • Hotel Europa City Vilnius — mid-range 4-star, airport shuttle easy to organise.

What to avoid

Booking on Pilies Street at full rack rate: Some of the hotels on the main tourist drag of Pilies Street charge 20-30% over what you’d pay a street or two away for the same quality. Always check Booking.com alongside the hotel’s own website.

Hotels in the business park outskirts: Several chain hotels (Ramada, Park Inn) sit in office districts 3-4 km from the Old Town near Konstitucijos pr. across the river. These suit business travellers but are inconvenient for sightseeing — a Bolt ride each way adds up over several days.

High-end choices worth the price

If budget is not a constraint, Vilnius has a few hotels that justify splurging:

  • Pacai Hotel (Didžioji g. 7) — a 17th-century baroque palace converted to a 5-star hotel; one of the most beautiful hotels in the Baltic states. Doubles from €200-350.
  • Radisson Blu Hotel Lietuva (Konstitucijos pr. 20) — modern 5-star across the river, stunning views back to the Old Town from upper floors; doubles from €130-200.

Practical booking tips

  • Book 4-8 weeks ahead for summer (June–August) in the Old Town.
  • High season is July–August — prices peak. May and September offer better value with similar weather.
  • Christmas market period (late November–early January) is a secondary peak — book at least 3 weeks ahead.
  • Self-catering apartments (Booking.com, Airbnb) consistently offer better value than hotels for stays of 3+ nights, especially in Užupis and Naujamiestis.

Frequently asked questions about where to stay in Vilnius

Is the Old Town noisy at night?

Some streets are. Vokiečių Street, the area around Šv. Ignoto and parts of Pilies Street near bars can be loud on Friday and Saturday nights until 2-3am. Ask for a rear-facing or upper-floor room, or book in the Užupis side of the Old Town which is quieter.

Is it safe to stay in Vilnius?

Yes. Vilnius is a safe city by any European metric. Petty theft (pickpocketing in busy tourist areas) exists as it does everywhere, but violent crime against tourists is rare. Užupis, Naujamiestis and Žvėrynas are all safe neighbourhoods.

What is the best area for public transport connections?

Naujamiestis is best for transport — the train station (for Trakai, Paneriai, Kaunas day trips) and the intercity bus terminal are both here. See trains and buses in Lithuania.

Can I check in late at Vilnius hotels?

Most 3-star and above hotels have 24-hour reception. Budget hostels typically have limited reception hours — check before booking if you arrive late. The Old Town has a high density of hotels with all-hours check-in.

Is parking available at Vilnius hotels?

Parking in the Old Town is restricted (paid zones, permit zones). Hotels inside the Old Town usually have agreements with nearby car parks — ask at booking. If you are driving, Naujamiestis or Žvėrynas hotels with parking are easier. For most visitors, leaving your car outside the city and using public transport makes more sense.
