Getting around Vilnius — transport guide
Vilnius: Airport private transfer
How do you get around Vilnius?
Walking covers most of the Old Town. Bolt (ride-hailing) is fast and cheap for longer journeys (€4-8 within the city). Public buses and trolleybuses cost €1 per ride. Day trips use the train or intercity bus — both depart from adjacent stations near the south end of the Old Town.
Vilnius is a forgiving city for transport newcomers. The Old Town is compact and fully walkable; the bus network is comprehensive for longer distances; Bolt makes point-to-point travel cheap and reliable; and day trips to Trakai, Kaunas and Paneriai use the train station which is a 25-minute walk from Cathedral Square.
Walking
For any visit centred on the Old Town, walking is the primary mode of transport. The core Old Town — Cathedral Square to the Gate of Dawn (Aušros Vartai) — is about 1.2 km on foot following Pilies Street (the main pedestrian axis). This walk takes 15-20 minutes without stopping and 45-60 minutes with the natural pauses at churches, courtyards and viewpoints.
Key walking times from Cathedral Square:
- Gate of Dawn: 15 minutes
- Užupis bridge: 12 minutes
- Gediminas Tower path base: 10 minutes (add 15 min to climb)
- Bernardine Garden: 10 minutes
- Train/bus station: 25 minutes
- Halės Market: 20 minutes
Cobblestones in the Old Town are genuine medieval or reproduction-period stone — comfortable shoes are non-negotiable. The surfaces are uneven and can be slippery when wet. There are smoother alternatives for most routes if you know where to look (parallel streets like Šv. Jono run parallel to Pilies with some smoother surfaces).
Bolt (ride-hailing)
Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing service in Vilnius and the most practical option for journeys of more than 20 minutes on foot.
Download: Bolt app (iOS/Android). Set up your account and payment method before you arrive — the verification process takes a few minutes.
Typical fares (2026 estimates, vary with surge):
- Cathedral Square to Halės Market: €3-4
- Cathedral Square to Vingis Park: €5-7
- Old Town to Žvėrynas: €5-6
- Old Town to shopping centres (Akropolis): €6-9
- Airport to Old Town: €6-9
When Bolt is best: Late at night (last public transport runs around midnight), carrying heavy luggage, groups of 3-4 splitting the cost, distances over 3 km in rain.
Surge pricing: Expect higher rates during Friday/Saturday evenings (22:00-02:00), major events, and rainy weather.
Vilnius: Airport private transferTaxi ranks (and why to avoid them)
Taxi ranks are visible at the airport, the train station, and some Old Town central points. Drivers at these ranks typically quote flat prices rather than metered rates. The quotes for airport-to-city-centre rides are often €18-28 — two to three times the Bolt equivalent. For short city rides, rank taxis are similarly overpriced compared to app-based services.
If you need a taxi and cannot use Bolt (for example, if your phone has no data), ask the driver to use the meter — all licensed taxis have one. Metered rates are regulated and reasonable. Refuse any driver who refuses to use the meter.
Public buses and trolleybuses
Vilnius has 60+ bus routes and 21 trolleybus routes. For tourists, the most useful are:
Key routes:
- Trolleybus 2/5/17 — runs along Gedimino prospektas, the main central boulevard from the Old Town to the Vingis Park area
- Bus 1/2 — Airport to city centre (Lukiškių Square), ~30-40 minutes
- Bus 88 — Žirmūnai to the train station, passes through city centre
- Bus 11 — connects the train station area northward
Fares:
- €1.00 via MTicket app (validate on board by selecting at the start of your journey)
- €1.10 cash payment on board (change given)
- Day pass: €3.00 via MTicket
- 3-day pass: €5.00
MTicket app: Download before you arrive. The app shows real-time bus positions (useful for seeing how long your wait is). Payment by card through the app. This is by far the most convenient payment method.
Operating hours: Most routes run 05:00–23:00 or midnight. Night bus services operate on reduced frequency after midnight.
Tickets: Must be validated on board by tapping the validator. Inspectors do check — fines for un-validated tickets are €15-25.
Train (for day trips)
Vilnius Central Station (Vilniaus geležinkelio stotis) is at Geležinkelio g. 16 — a 25-minute walk from Cathedral Square, or a €5 Bolt ride.
From Vilnius Station:
- Trakai: 30 minutes, trains roughly hourly, €1.50-2.00 each way
- Paneriai: 7-15 minutes, suburban service, €0.75-1.00 each way
- Kaunas: 55-70 minutes, trains every 30-60 minutes, €5-9 each way
Booking: ltglink.lt sells tickets online; you can also buy at the station. For Trakai and Paneriai, buy at the station window or platform ticket machine on the day — no advance booking needed.
See trains and buses in Lithuania for the full intercity network breakdown.
Intercity buses
The Vilnius intercity bus terminal (Vilniaus autobusų stotis) is directly adjacent to the train station at Sodų g. 22. Buses to Druskininkai (~1.5 h), Šiauliai (~3 h), Klaipėda (~3.5 h), and international destinations (Warsaw, Riga, Tallinn) depart from here.
Operators: Toks, Kautra, Lux Express (comfort coaches), Ecolines, Flixbus.
Booking: Online via eticket.lt or at the station. Advance booking recommended for popular weekend routes (Vilnius–Klaipėda in summer).
Airport connections
Vilnius Airport (VNO) is 6 km from the Old Town. Options:
- Train: From the airport terminal to Vilnius Central Station — 7 minutes, €0.60-1.00, runs every 30-60 minutes during the day. Fastest and cheapest option.
- Bus 1 or 2: To Lukiškių Square in the city centre — 30-40 minutes, €1.00.
- Bolt: €6-9 to Old Town, typically 15-20 minutes.
- Taxi rank: €15-25 — overpriced; avoid.
- Private transfer: Useful for groups or late arrivals.
See the dedicated Vilnius airport to city centre guide.
Cycling
Vilnius has significantly improved its cycling infrastructure in recent years. The riverside paths along the Neris (connecting Old Town area to Vingis Park) are flat and pleasant. Naujamiestis has dedicated lanes on some streets.
CycloCity: The city’s bike-sharing scheme with docking stations across the city centre. Day access via the app or card at docking stations. Electric bikes available.
Private rental: Several shops near the Old Town offer bike rental — typically €10-15/day for a standard bike, €15-25 for electric. Useful for the self-guided Vilnius to Trakai bike route (28 km one-way along flat terrain, train back) — see cycling in and around Vilnius.
Vilnius: City bike tour highlightsCar in the Old Town
Driving into the Vilnius Old Town is restricted — most of the historic centre is pedestrianised or permit-only during the day. If you are arriving by car, park at a P+R lot on the city edge and take public transport in. Key park-and-ride points:
- Žvėrynas P+R: West of the river, frequent trolleybus connections
- Antakalnis area: Northeast, near Vingis Park
- Paneriai P+R: South, connects via train
Paid parking zones (blue lines) apply in most central streets. Meter rates €1.50-3/hour. Apps: Ringo and EasyPark for cashless parking payment.
Private driver service
For groups visiting multiple sites outside Vilnius in a single day, a private driver can be cost-effective when split across 3-4 people. Full-day private driver services cover Vilnius + Trakai + one other site efficiently.

Is it safe to use Bolt in Vilnius at night?
Yes. Bolt is well-regulated in Lithuania and drivers are verified. The main precaution is to check the driver’s name and car plate in the app before getting in — the same common-sense approach as anywhere.
Can I use a contactless card on Vilnius public transport?
As of 2026, the primary payment options are the MTicket app (digital purchase, validate on board) or cash to the driver. Some validators accept bank card tap — check current status at vilniustransport.lt, as the system is being expanded.
How late do buses run in Vilnius?
Most routes until 23:00-midnight. Night buses (routes marked N) run reduced service after midnight on weekends. For late-night returns from bars or restaurants in the Old Town, Bolt is the practical option.
Is it easy to get a Bolt in Vilnius?
Yes — Bolt has good coverage in central Vilnius. At peak times (Friday-Saturday nights, major events) wait times can be 5-10 minutes. Outside the immediate city centre (Žvėrynas, further suburbs) waiting times can extend to 10-15 minutes.
Do I need any additional apps for transport in Vilnius?
MTicket (public transport), Bolt (rides), and ltglink.lt (train booking) cover all transport needs. Google Maps works well for route planning in Vilnius with public transport options.
