Day trips from Vilnius — the essentials

Vilnius sits in the south-east of Lithuania, which means some of the country's best destinations require a bit more travel than you might expect. That said, Trakai (28 km, 30 min by train or bus) is one of Europe's easiest half-day escapes, and Kaunas (100 km, ~1 hour by frequent train) rewards a full day.

If you have a car, a single day can reach the Hill of Crosses near Šiauliai (210 km, ~2.5 h) combined with a Kaunas stop. The Curonian Spit (310 km to Nida) is technically doable in a very long day with a car, but staying overnight in Nida or Klaipėda is far better.

Most day trips are perfectly feasible by public transport — Lithuania's intercity buses and LTG Link trains are reliable and cheap. For remote sites like Kernavė or Grūtas Park, a car or organised tour saves headaches.
